A head start on child themes

When you run your own website, there’s a good chance you’ll want to change something about the way it looks. Whether it’s the color of a button or the size of the text, something about it just won’t be exactly the way you want it. You’re hard to please. You can’t leave well enough alone. So you roll up your sleeves and get to fixing something that isn’t broken.

But hold on, big guy. Before you go slapping a coat of neon green paint on your brand new Mercedes, step back a minute and think about what you’re doing. If you don’t do the job properly, that lovely shade of green will come right off the first time you visit A1 Car Wash, and you’ll have to do it all over again.

If you customize your theme files directly, you’ll lose your changes when installing updates in the future. So what do you do? You make your customizations in a child theme. What’s a child theme?

“A WordPress child theme is a theme that inherits design and functionality from its parent theme. Child themes allow you to change certain design elements or features of your site without changing the parent theme directly.”

All jokes aside, we know that child themes can be a little confusing if you’re not familiar with them. We are frequently asked about ways to tweak our themes, and have explained how to create child themes many times. The hardest part of getting started with a child theme is often getting the right files in right place with the right stuff inside.

Today we’re happy to announce that we’ve put together a set of ready-made child themes for all of our themes. So, if you’re the kind of person that likes to tweak your site to perfection, head on over to the child theme article in the knowledge base and start breaking things!

Editor is now available on WordPress.com!

Earlier this year we released our first free theme, Editor, into the WordPress.org theme repository. Since then, it’s been downloaded nearly 60,000 times! We’ve seen some beautiful websites created with Editor and we couldn’t be more happy with its success.

Today, we’re happy to announce Editor is now available for WordPress.com users. If you have a WordPress.com account, you can activate Editor today by going to the Themes page and searching for “Editor”.

We’re excited to share Editor with even more folks and can’t wait to see what you create with it!

Featured Site: TED’s Return on Ideas Blog

Today’s featured site belongs to none other than TED. If you aren’t familiar, TED is a global set of conferences that feature progressive and inspiring talks and conversations about technology, entertainment and design.

TED’s Return on Ideas blog uses a customized version of Publisher. TED’s content is a great fit for Publisher’s masonry-style layout and infinite post loading. TED has taken Publisher a step further by adding a featured article section and a customized header.

We’re thrilled to see Publisher used to share unique content about science, design, technology, business, education, and arts! What will you share with Publisher?

Tolstoy calls art “a means of union among men, joining them together in the same feelings, and indispensable for the life and progress toward the well-being of individuals and of humanity”. I love this description of creativity for its communal qualities, claiming art as a unifying force.

Doubling Down On Design

Every year, we see a new wave of popular features and trends that pop up in commercial WordPress themes that tend to dominate the market before the next trend kicks in. Two years ago, everyone was crazy about theme options panels. Then it was shortcodes. Then it was content sliders. Now we’re in the drag and drop page builder era and next year, like clockwork, it will be something else.

These features were initially marketed as time savers and as a means of simple customization. In hindsight, though, we can see these “features” had some serious implications, as most shortcuts do when it comes to trying to build a quality website.

Pocket Now Available On WordPress.com

Since its inception, Pocket has been one of our most popular WordPress themes. What started as a weekend side project ended up becoming a theme that would power websites for professional writers, artists, photographers and many more creative folks. We never thought such a tiny theme could empower so many. And because of that, we’re delighted to announce that Pocket is now available on WordPress.com.

Meet Pocket 5.0

Pocket's light color scheme.

Pocket’s light color scheme.

We took this release opportunity to dive into Pocket and give it a full update. One of the first things Pocket users will notice is the new and improved header area. We’ve streamlined the header by moving the navigations to the top of the page and center-aligning the site title and description. This creates a more cohesive feel to Pocket, better matching the design of the posts.

Better on Mobile

This theme fits in your Pocket.

This theme fits in your Pocket.

Pocket has always been tablet and mobile friendly, but we also wanted to improve upon that experience. With one tap, users can now quickly and seamlessly access site navigation and widget areas. Use the tablet and mobile icons on the theme demo to test drive Pocket’s improved mobile styles and mobile menu.

Fire Up Your Jetpacks

Pocket supports several Jetpack modules.

We have also taken this update opportunity to add support for several Jetpack features such as Infinite Scroll, Tiled Galleries, Carousel, Contact Form and Sharing. These features are available on both the WordPress.org and WordPress.com version of Pocket and are entirely optional, but can greatly improve the reading and browsing experience on your site.

Download It Now!

We hope everyone enjoys the latest version of Pocket. If you’re a WordPress.com user, you can start creating with Pocket today by visiting the Pocket Details page or the Pocket Demo!

If you already own Pocket or have a Theme Pass here on Array, you can download Pocket v5.1 from your Dashboard right now. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Introducing Editor, A Free WordPress Theme

One of the first projects I wanted to tackle after launching Array was a free theme in the WordPress.org repository. I’ve wanted to submit a theme for some time, but the timing never worked out and I was a little intimidated by the review process. But after going through a few successful and painless reviews at WordPress.com, I decided it was time to get my hands dirty at WordPress.org.

Introducing Editor

Editor puts bold and beautiful publishing right at your fingertips with comfortable, legible typography and large featured images.

Clean and Crisp Typography

Editor’s typography styles have been hand-picked to provide a comfortable reading and writing experience. Use blockquotes and pull quotes to highlight your articles and editorials.

Versatile Sidebar

Editor features a sticky sidebar, keeping your site navigation, Featured Posts and widgets front and center. Using the Customizer you can choose a light or dark sidebar color scheme.

Scales To All of Your Devices

Editor is responsive, all the way down to mobile. Images, videos and text will scale down gracefully to iPad, iPhone and all devices in-between. Editor looks great on all devices!
