Doubling Down On Design

Every year, we see a new wave of popular features and trends that pop up in commercial WordPress themes that tend to dominate the market before the next trend kicks in. Two years ago, everyone was crazy about theme options panels. Then it was shortcodes. Then it was content sliders. Now we’re in the drag and drop page builder era and next year, like clockwork, it will be something else.

These features were initially marketed as time savers and as a means of simple customization. In hindsight, though, we can see these “features” had some serious implications, as most shortcuts do when it comes to trying to build a quality website.

Pocket Now Available On WordPress.com

Since its inception, Pocket has been one of our most popular WordPress themes. What started as a weekend side project ended up becoming a theme that would power websites for professional writers, artists, photographers and many more creative folks. We never thought such a tiny theme could empower so many. And because of that, we’re delighted to announce that Pocket is now available on WordPress.com.

Meet Pocket 5.0

Pocket's light color scheme.

Pocket’s light color scheme.

We took this release opportunity to dive into Pocket and give it a full update. One of the first things Pocket users will notice is the new and improved header area. We’ve streamlined the header by moving the navigations to the top of the page and center-aligning the site title and description. This creates a more cohesive feel to Pocket, better matching the design of the posts.

Better on Mobile

This theme fits in your Pocket.

This theme fits in your Pocket.

Pocket has always been tablet and mobile friendly, but we also wanted to improve upon that experience. With one tap, users can now quickly and seamlessly access site navigation and widget areas. Use the tablet and mobile icons on the theme demo to test drive Pocket’s improved mobile styles and mobile menu.

Fire Up Your Jetpacks

Pocket supports several Jetpack modules.

We have also taken this update opportunity to add support for several Jetpack features such as Infinite Scroll, Tiled Galleries, Carousel, Contact Form and Sharing. These features are available on both the WordPress.org and WordPress.com version of Pocket and are entirely optional, but can greatly improve the reading and browsing experience on your site.

Download It Now!

We hope everyone enjoys the latest version of Pocket. If you’re a WordPress.com user, you can start creating with Pocket today by visiting the Pocket Details page or the Pocket Demo!

If you already own Pocket or have a Theme Pass here on Array, you can download Pocket v5.1 from your Dashboard right now. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Introducing Editor, A Free WordPress Theme

One of the first projects I wanted to tackle after launching Array was a free theme in the WordPress.org repository. I’ve wanted to submit a theme for some time, but the timing never worked out and I was a little intimidated by the review process. But after going through a few successful and painless reviews at WordPress.com, I decided it was time to get my hands dirty at WordPress.org.

Introducing Editor

Editor puts bold and beautiful publishing right at your fingertips with comfortable, legible typography and large featured images.

Clean and Crisp Typography

Editor’s typography styles have been hand-picked to provide a comfortable reading and writing experience. Use blockquotes and pull quotes to highlight your articles and editorials.

Versatile Sidebar

Editor features a sticky sidebar, keeping your site navigation, Featured Posts and widgets front and center. Using the Customizer you can choose a light or dark sidebar color scheme.

Scales To All of Your Devices

Editor is responsive, all the way down to mobile. Images, videos and text will scale down gracefully to iPad, iPhone and all devices in-between. Editor looks great on all devices!

Happy Friday, folks! There’s nothing quite like jump-starting your day with a cup of your favorite coffee. Personally, my brain doesn’t kick in until I’ve had (at least) 1 cup of black coffee, preferably from one of the Latin American countries.

Today we have a free coffee-themed photo set for you! We’ve collected 15 of our favorite photos from coffee shops, afternoon espressos and perfectly-poured cappuccinos.

The Tools Behind A WordPress Theme Shop

When I started to build the Array site, I knew from the get-go that I was going to start from scratch. The only way to achieve the simplicity I wanted on the front-end, was to match it on the back-end. So I started with a blank style.scss file and it grew from there.

Keeping with that mindset, I knew that I wanted the inner workings of the site to be very lean and easily maintainable yet dangerously powerful and scalable. Having experimented with so many different WordPress products, tools and coding practices over the years, I was excited to pool all of these resources together and laser-beam-focus them onto Array. I knew which tools and plugins didn’t work, and I knew which ones worked incredibly well. This is a level you can only achieve by installing an astounding amount of poorly-crafted plugins. I’m still waiting on some sort of acknowledgement of this achievement, by the way.

So today, I thought I’d share with you some of the tools I used to build this new WordPress theme shop, Array.

Free Notebook Photo Set

Several months ago, I ran into a Kickstarter page for Baron Fig notebooks. I was immediately struck by the aesthetic and simplicity that the notebook promised. Although I foolishly didn’t back Baron Fig at the time, I was delighted to see they recently started shipping.

Fast forward to today, when I finally received a few of these notebooks in the mail. The build quality and paper are top-notch, and provide a great writing experience. I couldn’t help but take a few photos of these beautiful notebooks.

Introducing Array

I’m Mike McAlister. I’ve been involved with WordPress since 2009. For the past five years, I’ve been designing and developing quality WordPress themes under the moniker Okay Themes. With Okay, I was able to experiment with design and development as a theme provider on a massive scale at ThemeForest. I’m humbled to say I’ve since shared my WordPress theme collection with over 20,000 awesomely creative and supportive people.

Okay Themes has been a great vehicle to learn the ins-and-outs of the commercial theme space, as well as a great way to learn about my clientele and where I fit into the equation. Being a small-scale operation has provided me with the opportunity to connect with people who share the same ethos as myself and strive for simplicity.

Rather than focusing on the quantity of themes over the years, I’ve stayed fiercely dedicated to the quality of each and every theme in my collection. Spending hours nudging pixels around, reworking code to be as efficient and clean as possible, listening to feedback from users, keeping up with standards and adopting new technologies when they emerge. Details that can ultimately make a good product great.

Author Gets A Massive Update

Happy Wednesday, everyone! Today I have for you a huge update for Author WordPress Theme. Author was initially released on June 5th, 2012. Since then it had seen about 20 updates for bug fixes, new WordPress feature support and more. It’s our top priority to keep all of our themes up-to-date, functional and relevant.

The past two weeks have been dedicated to updating the entire collection, adding seamless, in-dash theme updates and extensive code cleanup across the board. Working with WordPress.com on Publisher, we learned a great deal about rigorous testing and code review. We’ve applied this same gauntlet to all themes.
